Systems Engineer

The Senior Systems Engineer works as a core team member within a team of IT Infrastructure professionals in order to support Vesta’s custom software applications. This position has primary responsibility for IT storage systems (SAN and NAS) with an emphasis supporting VM virtual machines, SQL databases, and backup and archive technologies. The Sr. Systems Engineer works very closely with the IT Application Support team, DBA group, and the IT Architecture team.

• Responsible for daily management of SAN and NAS storage in all defined Vesta environments. This includes diverse geographical locations as well as multiple storage vendors.
• Build and maintain working relationships with vendors in regards to service and support of storage and backup systems
• Work closely with the DBA group in defining storage requirements, utilization reporting, and alerting to production issues
• Expected to provide feedback on areas of responsibility which will enhance the overall solutions for storage, backups, and systems maintenance and administration
• Build and configure hardware and virtual machines which include server operating system installations, including Windows clustering
• Complete Service Desk tickets related to storage, backup, and server build requests Participate in on-call rotations for technical support as defined by on-call procedures
• Assist in recommending, developing, and testing new technologies and solutions
• Serve as a mentor and roll model for other more junior IT Infrastructure technicians
• Provide adequate documentation of procedures relating to job responsibilities
• Day-to-day responsibility for troubleshooting, change management, security, and monitoring of all IT Infrastructure systems

• Knowledge of iSCSI, Fibre Channel, SAN, RAID, and I/O storage subsystems
• Demonstrated experience with VMware ESX system management
• Basic understanding of networking technologies, including protocols, routing, QoS, NIC, and HBA
• 5 + years of Systems Engineer/Administrator, systems administration, and infrastructure systems support
• 4+ years experience in technical support position in medium to large client/server environment
• Patch management, web infrastructure design, and infrastructure experience with the ability to use operating system level and architecture understanding for solutions and trouble shooting
• Demonstrated knowledge of technical and data architecture, data security principles and practices, and best practices and industry standards for software environment management, inventory control, change control and deployment
• Excellent technical knowledge of application and networking, including load balancing applications, and ensuring fault tolerance for applications
• Extremely detail oriented with superior troubleshooting, problem-solving, documentation and record keeping skills
• Positive self-motivated team player with excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills

Detailed understanding of the following technologies:

• SAN’s; Dell Equallogic and NetApp
• VMware ESXBackup software and best practice methodologies
• Microsoft operating systems (MCSE Certification a plus)
• MS Windows clustering
• Operating System (OS) security, installation/configuration and hardware trouble-shooting
• Understanding of SQL database platforms, including SQL clustering
